How creativity, connection, and community are strengthening youth mental health across Denver
For many young people, mental health support can be difficult to access. Workforce shortages, cost, stigma, and other barriers leave thousands of Colorado youth without the care they need. In fact, approximately 40% of Colorado youth who experienced a major depressive episode did not receive mental health treatment, underscoring the need for accessible, community-based approaches that reach young people before they reach a crisis.
The ROCK Center is helping fill that gap through Peace Warriors, a prevention-focused program that brings trauma-informed, arts-based mental wellness programming directly into schools and community spaces. Rather than relying solely on traditional clinical settings, Peace Warriors helps youth build the skills that research shows are essential for long-term well-being: meaningful connection, healthy coping strategies, and confidence in themselves.
The impact extends beyond individual participants. Caregivers report seeing meaningful changes at home, educators see stronger student engagement, and Youth Leaders describe gaining lifelong coping skills, confidence, and even career inspiration through the program. One Youth Leader shared:
“My involvement impacted my life because I now have the same tools that we’ve been teaching campers. I can regulate myself. I have a sense of community and playfulness. I’ve developed my leadership skills, and I have chosen a career that is influenced by the knowledge I gained from Peace Warriors.”
By the Numbers
- 93% Felt like they were a part of a community at Peace Warriors
- 91% Reported they learned new tools to express themselves and their feelings.
- 98% of caregivers reported their child has learned new skills to help them better cope with challenges or difficult emotions
- 100% of participating schools said Peace Warriors increases access to mental wellness support for students who might not otherwise receive it.
By embedding mental wellness into places youth already gather, The ROCK Center is helping ensure that support is available before challenges become crises—building stronger, healthier communities one relationship at a time.
